The computer gaming giants apologised last month after the Bethesda data leak led to customers being able to access data they shouldn’t have.

According to reports from angry customers, the data leak reportedly involved personal information and some payment data. The leak came off the back of a number of complaints involving the Fallout 76 game, and the leak itself involved the company’s complaints systems.

As the world of online gaming continues to grow, we expect incidents like the Bethesda data leak to become more common.

What happened in the Bethesda data leak?

The Bethesda data leak involved an error with the company’s customer support website. It led to some customers receiving complaint support tickets for other customers.

Other people reported being able to access Bethesda’s internal complaints systems as well.

Data leaked is said to have included customer names, addresses and contact information. Some people said they were reportedly able to see some payment card information as well.

Anyone affected by the Bethesda data leak could be at risk of malicious activity. If the data falls into the hands of someone with intentions to cause harm or financial loss, victims could be at risk.

With online scammers increasingly interested in virtual property and the theft of such property – which can cost people a lot of money – the online gaming world is a clear target for hackers and scammers.

What has been said about the Bethesda data leak

In the aftermath of the Bethesda data leak, the company apologised and released the following statement:

“We experienced an error with our customer support website that allowed some customers to view support tickets submitted by a limited number of other customers during a brief exposure window. Upon discovery, we immediately took down the website to fix the error.”
