GCHQ is set to investigate the Dixons Carphone data breach that resulted in the debit and credit card information for almost six million people being exposed.

The Data Leak Lawyers have already been approached for help as a result of the data breach, and the team are available to advise anyone who comes forward for advice.

The GCHQ (the Government Communications Headquarters) is reportedly going to investigate Dixons Carphone’s data breach which is said to have occurred last year but has only now come to light.

Millions of records exposed

The Dixons Carphone data breach is massive. Hackers targeted 5.8 million credit and debit cards with the details of over 100,000 cards without chip-and-pin protection being leaked. Further, the personal data records for around 1.2 million people were also exposed.

It’s clear that the data breach means that the Dixons Carphone customers affected may now be at risk of fraud and identity theft.

This year’s mega breach?

The Dixons Carphone data breach could be this year’s mega breach headline. Last year, we saw the NHS almost crippled by the WannaCry attack, and millions of people fell victim to the Equifax data breach that we are representing a group of people for who are claiming for data protection breach compensation.

With the number of victims in the millions, this may well be 2018’s mega data breach.

Dixons Carphone GDPR fine incoming?

An organisation out there is going to be the first to truly fall foul of the new GDPR that could lead to fines that run into the millions of pounds. It’s just a matter of time given the almost inevitability of data breaches these days. The new powers granted to data regulators last month should act as motivation for organisations to shape-up their cybersecurity, but we all know that someone will fail.

In this case, it appears unlikely that the Dixons Carphone data breach will result in the new GDPR powers being used, given that the breach itself occurred last year. The fact that it appears to have taken almost a year for Dixons Carphone to notify customers and for the news of the breach to get out is also a concern.

Carphone Warehouse were previously fined £450,000 for their 2015 breach, which could have been far higher had it have happened after the GDPR came into force.
