Some 200,000 audio recordings of telephone conversations have been found exposed by media outlet Verdict. The audio files had reportedly been left exposed for over three years on Amazon Web Services, with recordings dated between April and August 2016.

Teletext Holidays data breach exposes personal information

Personal information has been exposed as a result of the Teletext Holidays data breach that was discovered by Verdict.

They say that around 532,000 files were exposed, with around 212,000 audio files of customers contacting an India-based call centre. Personal information like names, birth dates and passenger information was discussed in calls. In a small number of calls, payment card information was reportedly partially disclosed as well.

The files left exposed on the Amazon Web Service have now been removed, but with them being exposed for such a long period of time, they may have already been accessed by cybercriminals. This isn’t the first time an organisation has left information exposed on a storage system like Amazon, so we know they’re a targets for criminals.

Response to the data breach

Speaking about the Teletext Holidays data breach, Truly Travel (who trade under the name of Teletext Holidays) told the BBC that: “Once the matter was brought to our attention, we immediately secured the files in question.”

They also confirmed that the incident has been referred to the UK’s data regulator, the Information Commissioner’s office (ICO). With the initial British Airways fine being set at £183m, and the initial Marriott fine set at £99m, Truly Travel could also face a substantial fine for the exposure.
