The ICO may be looking into the recent Telford & Wrekin Council data breach. This appears to be another preventable public sector data breach.

The ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office) may need to investigate the breach, which has been referred to the regulator. Whether they look further into the breach may depend on the risks the breach causes. This can also be interlinked in terms of whether a person has grounds for a claim as well.

The latest Telford & Wrekin Council data breach is said to be one in a line of incidents that have taken place since April. This particular breach is reportedly the second recent one to be referred to the ICO.

The latest Telford & Wrekin Council data breach

The latest Telford & Wrekin Council data breach was an entirely preventable incident on the face of it. Unfortunately, many simple leaks and breaches are caused by avoidable errors.

In this breach, a member of staff is understood to have disclosed the wrong personal details to the wrong person. The nature of the information disclosed has not been confirmed, but the fact that the breach has been referred to the ICO may suggest this is a serious breach.

If the ICO feel there are grounds to investigate the breach further, they may also impose monetary penalties. Since GDPR came into force, organisations are now subject to far greater fines.

The person whose information has been breached should be notified of the incident to allow them to take action
