We’ve launched our compensation action for victims of the Virgin Media cybersecurity incident that hit the headlines last week. If you’ve been affected, here’s what you need to know.

We’re representing claimants on a No Win, No Fee basis for claims having been contacted for help when news of the data breach broke last week. We believe that victims can be entitled to claim, and we believe that we can succeed with a legal action, which is why we have launched legal cases.

Victims should be informed by Virgin Media if their information has been exposed in the data leak. If you’ve received a breach notification email, we may be able to help you.

Who’s affected by the Virgin Media cybersecurity incident?

Around 900,000 customers have been affected by the Virgin Media cybersecurity incident, with unsecured personal information left exposed and accessible online.

Investigations have revealed so far that the unsecure data has been accessed by at least one unknown third-party. It’s not known as to whether the person that accessed the information did so with malicious intentions, or whether they’ve taken copies or sold data elsewhere. It was a security researcher that raised the incident with Virgin last week, and we would  imagine that if the previous third-party had also been a researcher then they would have done the same. The fact that this hasn’t happened is a cause for concern.

Data exposed in the event includes:

  • Names;
  • Email addresses;
  • Telephone numbers;
  • Account data, including contract information.

Risks to the victims

The risks to the victims whose data has been exposed in the Virgin Media cybersecurity incident could be severe.

The leaked information is enough for third parties with malicious intentions to try and commit crimes like fraud and ID theft. It’s also enough for scammers to contact victims and pose as Virgin Media to try and dupe them into handing over more data or money. This is precisely what has happened to some victims of the similar TalkTalk cyberattack, so the risk of such incidents taking place is very real.

Victims now need to be vigilant and keep a close eye on their accounts, especially any linked to their Virgin media account.

Data Leak Lawyers: taking action

We’re taking action for victims of the Virgin Media cybersecurity incident having accepted a growing number of No Win, No Fee data breach compensation claims for victims.

We’ve already launched our action for justice, and if you have been told that you were affected, we may be able to help you too.

Victims could be entitled to claim compensation for any distress caused by the loss of control of personal information, as well as for any financial losses that may occur. Victims could also claim for simply being affected by the breach incident as well.
