{"id":2973,"date":"2018-04-19T10:34:58","date_gmt":"2018-04-19T09:34:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dataleaklawyers.co.uk\/blog\/?p=2973"},"modified":"2024-07-05T12:38:21","modified_gmt":"2024-07-05T11:38:21","slug":"talktalk-cybersecurity-lessons-continue-neglected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dataleaklawyers.co.uk\/blog\/talktalk-cybersecurity-lessons-continue-neglected","title":{"rendered":"TalkTalk accused of continuing to neglect cybersecurity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"text-center\">\n<div class=\"alert alert-danger\" role=\"alert\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<i class=\"fas fa-exclamation-triangle\"><\/i> <b>UPDATE: PLEASE NOTE THAT WE ARE NO LONGER ABLE TO ACCEPT NEW CASES IN THIS MATTER.<\/b>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Telecoms giant TalkTalk have been accused of continuing to neglect cybersecurity after a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/talktalk-urged-to-improve-cybersecurity-in-wake-of-worryingly-easy-web-system-flaw-11307730\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">hacker contacted Sky news<\/a> and reported website security flaws that had been left unfixed for years.<\/p>\n<p>The news comes as little surprise to us as <a href=\"\/talktalk-customer-data-breach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">we continue to represent victims for previous TalkTalk cyber-hacks<\/a> that were, in our view, entirely preventable.<\/p>\n<p>According to the media reports from the end of March, the hacker found a simple scripting error that allowed him to take control of a TalkTalk.co.uk URL, and use it to trick customers that they were visiting a genuine TalkTalk website.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>TalkTalk&#8217;s history of substandard cybersecurity<\/h2>\n<p>The unfixed flaw could reportedly be an easy one to exploit with phishing scams, which are a continual headache for all. Given TalkTalk&#8217;s obvious history of what appears to be substandard cybersecurity, the news that a hacker found yet another simple unfixed flaw, that was well-known for years, is concerning.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/talktalk-fined-400k-weak-security-protection-customer-accounts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">TalkTalk has already been fined &pound;400,000 by the Information Commissioner&#8217;s Office (ICO) for the preventable 2015 breach<\/a>, as well as an <a href=\"\/blog\/talktalk-fined-100k-putting-customers-risk-scams-fraud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">additional &pound;100,000 when the data of 21,000 customers was exposed<\/a> to rogue staff at a foreign call centre. <\/p>\n<p>Despite these hefty fines, it seems TalkTalk simply hasn&#8217;t learned its lesson. Talktalk cybersecurity vulnerabilities have been allowed to remain in their systems, and as one of the more popular choices as a telecoms and internet provider, they&#8217;re playing with fire with a lot of people&#8217;s data.<\/p>\n<h3>Ignoring cybersecurity will cost businesses<\/h3>\n<p>Ignoring cybersecurity will cost businesses; not just in fines from regulators and customers leaving as a result of the breaches, but with the legal action as well.
