People still need (or want) to use the services that are at the centre of big data breaches, so we need to look at making sure that appropriate punishments are issued to stop retail data breaches happening again.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>What can be done to stop retail data breaches?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A lot \u2013 the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataleaklawyers.co.uk\/blog\/ico-publishes-useful-gdpr-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>GDPR coming into force this month<\/strong><\/a> will allow for bigger financial punishments for data breach offenders, and it\u2019s also increasing the burden in terms of protection. But these are new measures, and so big organisations guilty of past data breaches (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataleaklawyers.co.uk\/blog\/talktalk-fined-100k-putting-customers-risk-scams-fraud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>like TalkTalk<\/strong><\/a>) have escaped with a relatively lower burden in terms of a financial cost.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What can retail data breach victims do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Victims of a retail data breach can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataleaklawyers.co.uk\/what-do-i-claim-for\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>claim for data breach compensation<\/strong><\/a>.
