With over 145 million people affected by it \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataleaklawyers.co.uk\/blog\/no-surprise-uk-equifax-hack-victims-grown-again\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>and 700,000 of those here in the UK<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 it\u2019s massive. What\u2019s worse is the fact that the data they held and left exposed was personal and sensitive, and some of it was financial. The Harvard material is marketed for people to look at the current issues of cybersecurity and how companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataleaklawyers.co.uk\/blog\/equifax-executive-charged-selling-shares-prior-breach-disclosure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Equifax manage and respond to data breach incidents.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although we appreciate the value of such material \u2013 especially when it\u2019s published by an esteemed institution like Harvard \u2013 the long and short of this particular data breach isn\u2019t too difficult to analyse.<\/p>\n<p>Simply put, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataleaklawyers.co.uk\/blog\/equifax-hack-compromised-15-million-uk-records\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Equifax failed to patch a known security vulnerability.<\/strong><\/a> On top of that, their own systems failed to identify the ongoing vulnerability. Fast-forward a few months, cybercriminals looking to exploit the vulnerability discover that Equifax hasn\u2019t secured their systems, and they easily break into and find the exposed data.<\/p>\n<p>This was ultimately a gross failure in due diligence on the part of Equifax to ensure that a wealth of data they held for millions of people was safe and secure.
