{"id":3123,"date":"2018-06-18T21:39:40","date_gmt":"2018-06-18T20:39:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dataleaklawyers.co.uk\/blog\/?p=3123"},"modified":"2018-06-18T21:39:40","modified_gmt":"2018-06-18T20:39:40","slug":"half-of-uk-manufacturing-industry-report-cyber-attacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dataleaklawyers.co.uk\/blog\/half-of-uk-manufacturing-industry-report-cyber-attacks","title":{"rendered":"Almost half of UK manufacturing industry report cyber-attacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Almost half of businesses in the UK manufacturing industry have reported cyber-attacks, with the UK manufacturing industry described as somewhat of an easy target.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t often see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataleaklawyers.co.uk\/blog\/self-driving-cars-and-the-cybersecurity-risks-and-data-breach-risks-they-pose\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>manufacturers in the news for data breaches<\/strong><\/a> and cyber-attacks, but this date from a recent study shows that there is a worrying trend of it being a common problem in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>The UK manufacturing industry is reportedly among the least-protected sector in the UK.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Worrying statistics<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>According to data gleaned from a recent survey, a quarter of over 150 firms surveyed confirmed that they had lost money because of a cyber-attack, or that their business was disrupted as a result of an attack.<\/p>\n<p>Further, almost half of the respondents confirmed that they had been the victim of some form of cyber-attack which shows how rife the problem is in the industry; and this doesn\u2019t include the ones that have gone unnoticed or have not been reported.<\/p>\n<p>This puts the UK manufacturing industry in third-place in terms of the least protection, just behind the government and the finance sector.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is it so bad?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s believed that UK manufacturing industry businesses simply does not pay enough attention to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataleaklawyers.co.uk\/blog\/scams-fraud-from-data-breaches-leaks-cause-for-concern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>dangers of data breaches and cyber-attacks<\/strong><\/a>. Many businesses still wrongly assume that it\u2019s the finance sector and banks or insurance services that will be targeted the most, but as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataleaklawyers.co.uk\/blog\/ransomware-on-the-rise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ransomware continues to grow,<\/strong><\/a> it\u2019s manufacturers who can become easy targets for ransomware attacks where businesses are held to ransom to regain access to their locked-out systems.<\/p>\n<p>Time is money, so if cyber-attackers can cost business time, they\u2019re costing them money as well. We already know that cyber-criminals will not price themselves out of their victims\u2019 budget either. They\u2019re smart, and they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataleaklawyers.co.uk\/blog\/ransomware-demands-drop-cyber-attackers-victimise-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>often demand just enough to make it far more easier and tempting for a business to stump up the demand<\/strong><\/a> as oppose to losing money.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Easy targets are targeted<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It seems like a bit of an obvious statement to say that easy targets are targeted, but it\u2019s an incredibly important point. By failing to take heed of the dangers of cyber-attacks, the UK manufacturing industry is simply opening itself up to be an easy target that will be abused.<\/p>\n<p>The other important thing that businesses need to recognise is their duty to protect the people whose data they hold.
