Given that the attack took place before the GDPR came into force, Equifax were issued the maximum financial penalty under the previous rules. This was \u00a3500,000.00; a drop in the ocean compared to the millions they could have faced had the attack happened in the post-GDPR era.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s nothing that could be done to have increased the penalties given that was the maximum under the old rules. But with the organisation turning over $3.362bn last year alone, they\u2019re worth a lot. A proper punishment would come in the way of ensuring that victims of the cyber attack are duly compensated, with Equifax paying the bill.<\/p>\n

Criminal punishments for the Equifax cyber attack lacking <\/strong><\/h3>\n

Some of the criminal punishments issued over the Equifax cyber attack have been lacking in conviction in my view.<\/p>\n

Just last month, former software product development manager, Sudhakar Reddy Bonthu, was sentenced to eight months of home confinement for insider trading. This followed a guilty plea earlier in the year.<\/p>\n
