The police investigated the matter after a complaint from one of his patients was made where she had suspected that she was being recorded.<\/p>\n<p>The filming of patients can amount to a complete breach of privacy and the Data Protection Act, as well as the Human Rights Act. He was discovered after a patient alerted the police about her suspicions that she was being filmed in the examination room.<\/p>\n<p>The patient is understood to have spotted two mobile phones that were propped up and were facing the two examination areas as Altaii examined her. After she noticed the second mobile phone propped up, she became extremely uncomfortable and notified the police.<\/p>\n<p>The police searched Altaii\u2019s home and confiscated his personal laptop where they found 19,000 images and videos of female patients. The images and videos were reportedly described as \u201c<em>some clothed and others in various stages of undress<\/em>\u201d which appeared to have been taken in the surgery.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Consequences for Dr Altaii<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Dr Thair Altaii is understood to have denied three offences of voyeurism in relation to two women between 2008 and 2014. Four years later, he was convicted by a jury at Newcastle Crown Court in July 2018 and was then sentenced to 14 months in jail and\u00a0ordered to sign the sex offenders&#8217; register for 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>When Dr Thair Altaii went to trial in 2014, he reportedly accepted that he had recorded nine medical consultations without the permission of the patients.
