Equifax data breach fine: maximum penalty issued

The Equifax data breach fine from the ICO is the maximum amount that can be issued under the pre-GDPR rules. We welcome the decision.

Last year, we initiated our legal action against Equifax for victims of their mega breach. We’re now representing a number of individuals affected by the breach. If you have yet to join our Claimant Group, please contact us as soon as you can. It’s not too late.

The fine issued by the ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office) is the maximum allowed under the former rules before GDPR came into force. However, the fine does not account for the compensation that we’re pursuing for people.

Equifax data breach fine is the maximum allowed

The Equifax data breach fine of £500,000.00 is the maximum allowed under the former rules for fines before GDPR came into force.

This reflects the seriousness of this very preventable breach.

The breach was caused by a failure to patch a known security vulnerability, and then a further failure to identify the ongoing problem. Equifax were also criticised for their handling of the breach.

With 700,000 victims’ personal data exposed to the point they were put at risk, and a further 14.5m records exposed, this was a huge breach.

Data leak Lawyers welcome the Equifax data breach fine

We welcome the Equifax data breach fine issued, but it doesn’t go far enough to make sure victims receive the justice they deserve.

Victims of the Equifax data breach are entitled to claim for compensation on top of the fine. You do not have to have suffered a financial loss, as you can claim for the distress of being affected. If you have suffered a financial loss, we can look to recover this for you.

It’s worth remembering that Equifax could consider themselves lucky. Had the attack have taken place this year, they could have seen a GDPR fine that could have amounted to millions of pounds.

British Airways are may be facing a potential fine of £500m fort their recent data breach. You can read more about this action here if you’re affected.
