Another Three data breach?

compromised mobile phone

There has reportedly been yet another Three data breach, and the circumstances for the incident are almost the same as a previous one; which is worrying.

According to The Register earlier this month, there has been yet another case where people have been able to see the account information for other customers when using Three’s website. With the phone provider said to have around 10 million customers, any data breach they suffer could be monumental.

This isn’t the first time this exact problem has happened, and we have represented victims for Three data breaches in the past as well.

About the latest Three data breach

This latest Three data breach incident appears to be the same as the previous one whereby random customers’ information was visible to other people using their site.

The problem may have been linked to a recent issue with access to some accounts. This doesn’t fill me with confidence as a Three customer myself who had problems around the time this happened. I think I’d better get in touch with them to find out if my personal information has been exposed…

A spokesperson for the company is understood to have said:

“We are aware of an issue with my3 where fewer than 10 customers have reported being able to view another customer’s account information. No sensitive financial information was viewable at any time, we are investigating the matter and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

The matter has also been referred to the UK’s data watchdog, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

The importance of data protection

When we see incidents like this recent Three data breach, we’re reminded of the importance when it comes to companies protecting the data that they store and process.

If they have 10 million customers, a data breach that exposes information could affect millions of people, and could be absolutely catastrophic. When these kinds of incidents occur, it makes us understandably worry about how tight their overall cybersecurity really is.

All organisations need to see data protection as like having the sword of Damocles balancing over your head (no, seriously). It can be so easy to make one wrong move, or neglect to do one small thing, and the consequences can be fatal. When you look at case like the BA Group Action we’re involved with, where the ICO’s intention to fine stands at £183m and where the overall cost of claims could be in the billions, the dangers are obvious.
